TP # 9 Mark G.

After tutoring David in the library, I went over to All Saints Cafe to meet Sung at our usual time. Today I helped him with his presentation that he will be giving tomorrow in his class speaking class. He has to present a topic with another classmate about a topic of their choice Him and his classmate (mostly his classmate Sung told me) chose Japanese culture as viewed in Tallahassee. As research, both Sung and his partner interviewed different people around campus. Some of the results were a little cryptic, but in general clear. For example some of the names were just, "army girl" and "english girl". Some of the answers were also just one word or so. They asked people to describe Japanese culture in one word and why they thought of that word. I helped Sung clear up some grammar issues, including creating sentences for answers that were only one word. There was one interesting slide that Sung had which was titled "analyze". Sung didn't know exactly how to approach the topic, but I asked him to compare the people's answers and his own experience (sung studies Japanese and lived in Japan for a short while). He told me that in fact what most of the people had said was wrong. I thought it was a good breakthrough and would be an interesting part of his project. I gave him some advice on how to organize his ideas via a venn diagram or some other thought organizing tool. At the end of our session I think Sung had a really good project in hand and was ready to teach his class about the differences in how culture is perceived. I look forward to seeing him next week for the new session.
