For my last meeting with Osama, we decided to gather at the "Downtown Getdown". This event precedes FSU home football games. A main part of the city is shut down and cornered off to become pedestrian-friendly. There are numerous vendors from local restaurants selling an eclectic assortment of food. Also, many country and rock bands come into town to play on the main stage.
Since the event was arranged by CIES, we met at the fountain in front of the Westcott building. There was maybe 20-25 international students there and it was fascinating to observe the intersection of cultures. Following our walk to the downtown area, we first decided to order some food. I was determined to eat gator tail and fortunately a shop was selling it. Just like chicken!
Next, we watched a rather lame fire-breathing troupe. It was interesting at first, but the moves they performed became repetitive. After nearly being immolated by a plume rocketing right over our heads, we decided to hightail it out of there.
The highlight of the night though came when Osama, his roommates, and I danced in the middle of the street. There was a group playing drums and didgeridoos, and it inspired us to move a bit. We locked hands and performed a male dance native to their culture. Oh, and it required us to chant rather loudly. I just mumbled along. We may have garnered more than a few stares, but it was a blast.
After walking around for a few hours and partaking in the festivities, we said our good byes. It was a successful night indeed.
