I went to Mellow Mushroom with Takuya. Today, the discussion was about
sports. Takuya told me that during the past weekend, he went to Atlanta to
watch a basketball game. When I asked if this was a popular event in Japan, he
stated that it was not. Generally, people in Japan do not attend sports
matches. Though the tickets are relatively low cost, the interest is not
present. In comparison, in America, tickets can go beyond $200 depending on the
game. In Japan, even the most competitive match would not exceed $100. Stadiums
would not be completely filled unless the match was between the two best teams.
Even then, the possibility of there being even a seat leftover was high.
Obviously, in America, seats run out so quickly that people have begun the
practice of buying a ticket and then selling it for a marked up price. I told
him that in America, recently MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) has become little bit
more popular, and asked him if contact sports were having the same effect in
Japan. He told me that K1 (a kickboxing tournament) and wrestling has always
been there, but the popularity is not at all the same like in America.
