Jesse Marks TP:5 Claire, Coloring, and Short A sounds

Working with Claire has become something I look forward to each week because she is so sweet! This week was no exception! Upon my arrival, she expressed her need to color instead of finishing her homework which made me laugh considering she is still six years old. I promised her that if she finished her homework then I would paint with her. This put a big smile on her face. Her mother gave me a list of sounds that Claire was having trouble pronouncing and recognizing. As we continued going through the sounds, I found that the short A sound was a consistent hindrance. We focused on the short A sound through several activities that included finding similar words with the same use of "a" like bat and rat. Her knowledge of sounds is impressive, but she needs to be able to recognize them on paper and in her own speech. This has given me a wonderful opportunity to refresh my memory of phonetic sounds and rules.
Following our activities, we painted together. This gave me the opportunity to test her knowledge of colors (and ability to create new colors). We painted her dream house and it is now on my wall! What a great lesson!
