The first class I observed was a reading (foundations) class.
The first thing I noticed is that the teacher used very modifi
ed speech. For the introduction (or pre-activity) the teacher showed a picture from a recent CNN news report and asked the class what was wrong in the picture. Eventually someone raised their hand and announced that news anchor was reporting on Hong Kong but on the map they were actually pointing to Brazil in South America. They had made a huge mistake on live television. It was a good icebreaker.
The main activity was a worksheet that was a cruise ship flyer. Each student took turns reading a part of it out loud until it was finished. She highlighted their pronunciation errors as they spoke. Next, they worked in pairs to try and figure out the correct pronunciation. As they worked on that task, the teacher was writing the error words on the board. The students then had to come up to the board and mark the correct vowel sound above the words (such as if it was a long vowel sound or silent).
After error correction was done she then answered anymore questions they had about the text. Then they answered the comprehension questions about the text on the back. It was a very well thought out lesson.
