Jesse TP4: Working with Sight Words

This tutoring session I had the opportunity to work with Claire on sight words. Our lessons differ from my lessons with other students because Claire is only 6, but her school structures her homework very specific. This allows for smooth transitions between activities! This session, we began with 10 minutes of conversation about her favorite activities or me asking questions about her drawings. She has quite the imagination. As we talk, she tells me of these "inventions" that she designs that are well beyond her age. If you have ever played "Mouse Trap", then you would imagine her designs. I asked her if she would ever try to build them, and she responded saying, "Of course not silly, I do not have half of the stuff I would need and it won't fit in the house!". I simply laughed, and encouraged her to dream and make her dreams a reality! We continued with sight reading. She has books that are "1+" for her level. She does not like to focus for too long on reading. We have to work around "reading time" by incorporating activities that include sight reading. For example, I would write a short paragraph and have her read it. Then she would draw what she read. This was very beneficial.
