When I met with PJ two weeks ago, we reviewed the vocabulary
lists that we had worked on over the past several weeks and played all the
vocabulary games. I noticed that PJ got a lot of words correct that he had previously
had trouble with but he still had trouble remembering some words. The review of
the vocabulary is just as important as the introduction. We finished off the
lesson with the last few chapters of the book we had been reading. PJ really enjoyed
the book and was proud when we had finished the chapter book. I happened to be
wearing my Extreme Reader shirt that day and I took the time to tell him about
my tshirt and what it meant after we read the book. When I worked at an
elementary school a few years ago, there was something called the Extreme Reader
Challenge where the kids (and adults) were challenged to read over 1 million
words. This was tracked by the Accelerated Reader system. I love reading and I
had challenged several kids while I was there. I read and passed the AR tests
to earn my tshirt and it was a way to challenge students to read extensively. I
hoped that sharing my passion for extensive reading is a positive encouragement
for PJ.
Caitlin, P.J. seems to really enjoy studying vocabulary with you. Thanks a million for making all the efforts to help him improve his vocabulary. Please remember vocabulary should be taught in context. Make sure to provide enough example sentences so that he learns how to use those words as well. Keep up the good work! =)
