Ning Liu CO#1

Speaking Class 1-C
Instructor – Candace Walters
When she entered the room, she immediately engages in classroom chat. She tells the class what the agenda is while she writes it on the board.
-          Date
-          Review reading prices
-          Finish planning & acting out role-play
-          Begin “Survivor” activity
The room becomes strangely quiet once I enter.
She continues to chat with the students.
“How is everybody today?”
“It’s cold in here, like a refrigerator.”
She collects errors while she has the students ask me questions.
“How many month have you been here?”
She corrects it on the board and emphasizes the “s” in “How many months.”
Everybody’s speaking abilities seem fluent, though this may be because the class’s majority is made up of Brazilians and Mexicans.
The teacher allows students to talk amongst themselves under the condition that they use English, which they do. It seems like the students enjoy using English to communicate.
Her speech rate is slow enough for everybody to hear and understand. During class, she calls each of the students by his or her name. Whenever a student answers correctly, the teacher will repeat the answer.
She shows the classroom skit outlines. She gives the context and the instructions. This was a brief review, so my assumption is that examples and explanations were given last class. During this reviewing session, she collects errors and writes them on the board.
The atmosphere seems to be pretty friendly.
She explains usages of grammar logically. She then gives acceptable context in where students may use the grammar points.
