Ning Liu TP#7




As we didn’t finish the article, we continued to press on. Ooki’s reading abilities were pretty good, but the comprehension was still lacking. Granted, he understood academic works to an extent. When he reads this article, however, there is quite some confusion due to its colloquialism. As he encountered words that he did not know, he wrote them down in his notepad. Regular, simple words, such as square and rectangle, were jotted down as well. This was because though he knew the words in Japanese, he did not know them in English. One thing that’s interesting was when we encountered the word “dimension.” He was very confused when the author used the term “same dimensions.” He understood that there was 1st dimension (a line), 2nd dimension (a plane), and 3rd dimension. However, the concept of being able to state that the original iPhone 5 and the new iPhone 5S had the same dimensions was very foreign. It seems that in Japanese, the word dimension cannot be used in such a way. This is very interesting because in English, we use it as such many times when describing shapes and sizes in comparison.
