Pamela CO2 Derrick Pollock's Speaking Class
I apusrived at the classroom early, I'd say around 12:45 p.m I took out my notebook and began checking my observation questions. At around 12:50 I heard seversl students engaging in English conversations and telling jokes, basically just being themselves. The instructor came into the classroom and immediately I knew I was in the wrong classroom and I was observing the wrong instructor. Derrick Pollock graciously allows me to stay and observe his speaking class. I had arrived just an hour before I was supposed to observe Debbie Carretta's Listening class. I was completely comforted by the fact that I was as out of my comfort zone as the students' may have felt at one time.
Mr. Pollock started his class off by calling roll in attendance and then he be gone by asking questions such as what did you do yesterday? Where wIll you go today? How far do you have to go? I thought this was a good way to get the class thinking and reflecting on vocabulary and in using the English language? Then, he reviewied the vocabulary words and collected homework. He reminded the class of the quiz on vovabulary, and asked if they had any questions before quiz.
After the quiz Mr. Pollock asked the students to take out the FSU campus map. He then showed the class on the overhead projector where the Strozier
Library was on campus. He explained to them that tomorrow they would be taking a field trip to the library. The students would have to use the map and ask for directions to find the library. The class would work in pairs to come up with simple questions and wave to remember how to use the map to get to the library. The instructor did a wonderful job walking around, monitoring, checking for errors, and making sure the class understood the assignment. The one's that needed extra help were asked to come to the projector screen and the instructor went over the map with them.
