TP #5 Mark G Parrotfish

Today I met up with David, my child tutee, on the second floor of the county library. As usual, he had homework to do and his mom showed me the book he was reading for his reading log...We fist did some of his math homework problems...I don't really like working on that too much because it isn't too english related. But his mom does give it to me when we talk about what we are going to do that day. I mean it is mostly word problems but he seems to be fine in math...Afterwards I had him read me his book. He read it just fine and appeared to understand all the words in the book. I quizzed him afterwards to check this from the glossary in the back of the book. I then asked him to write out the words. Unfortunately david could not spell 90% of the words that were used and related to the book (which was about parrotfish). The words were a little tricky, some of them having similar sounds, such as: school, scales, skeleton etc...I tried to get him to figure out the word himself but some of them I didn't know how to explain to discriminate the sound...Next week I will recheck him on the words with a short quiz on those words...After that I rechecked his knowledge of the story and write a summary. I tried to get him to organize his ideas logically talking about the parrotfish in general and then more specifically...I think I was expecting him to write at a level beyond where he is at. All in all he did well today, however he was a little restless at times. I am not very good with being strict or forward with a child his age and in the library...I will have to work on that. ...
