TP#2 Mel
Last
Tuesday I met with Maria for the second time at the Goldstein
library. She brought with her a book that she needed to read by that
Friday for a book report. While the new book was a much easier read
than the one she brought last week, she was still struggling with
comprehension. I recorded all the vocabulary words she didn't know
and made her summarize after every page. While that helped, she was
still making up parts of the story that she had deduced from the
pictures. We really couldn't focus much on proper comprehension
skills because she needed to read and understand as much as she
could, to make her deadline. She seems like a very dedicated student
and her mother is very involved, but I don't believe her school is
giving her the proper support she needs. I plan on talking to her her
mother about her school and seeing if maybe next time she could get
an extension on her reading assignments. Her skill will only improve
if she has the right environment to foster it. It is just really
frustrating to watch her struggle with a third grade level book, and
some high frequency words. Next week I hope to focus more on her
vocabulary and developing reading comprehension skills.
