Sunghyuk told me that he has been studying English formally since he was a small child. This is typical it seems of many Korean students. What isn't typical is that his parents are both English professors!..His speaking ability was good but it could certainly use some fine tuning and more vocabulary. I found him often using awkward structures and incorrect word choices. I asked him if I could correct him when he made a mistake and he was happy for me to do so. In terms of writing and composition, Sunghyuk is very impressive. His meaning is clear and his paper nicely structured, his only downfall are small grammar mistakes such as incorrect preposition use. My approach with Sunghyuk will be to focus on building vocabulary so he can express himself more and also hone in on grammar structures that he still has trouble with.
Sounds like he's very advanced and your job will be fine-tuning :)
