TP #3 Mel
Last
Wednesday I met my tutoring partner Mitsue. We ended up going to the
William Johnson building and talked about what she struggles with the
most with learning English. She is from Japan and has moved around a
bit with her husband who is in the military. She has tried learning
English a few times before, but never got through a full course
because she moved a lot. She really wanted to go over grammar and
sentence structure which she has only a foundation level for. I was a
little unprepared with my grammar knowledge, but we mostly went over
basic tenses. I have already borrowed a grammar book from my friend
for next week session, so I can actually explain why a grammar rule
exist. We also practiced going over mouth formations for certain
pronunciations, she struggles especially with “t” and “th”
sounds. While we were walking back to CIES, we made plan to go to a
football game or she said she'd make me dinner sometime!

Since Mitsue's husband is American, her English fluency is good compared to other ESL students at her level. However, she makes considerable basic grammar errors such as subject-verb agreement errors. Thus, try to teach her grammar-in-use based on her own grammar errors.
