This week’s tutoring session with PJ went a lot better and I
think he enjoyed it more too. I want to help him with his English, but at the
same time, since we meet on Saturdays, I try to make the lesson as interesting
as possible so it doesn't feel so much like “homework”. We were supposed to spend 30
minutes working on writing descriptive sentences but our warm-up game was
really fun so I let PJ go longer than originally planned. This meant that we
had less time to read at the end but he enjoyed the lesson more than last week and
was improving his writing. We used the whiteboard to write our descriptive
words to describe two cartoon pictures. I wrote the words down as PJ said them
and asked questions to prompt more creativity when he ran out of adjectives. He
then read me his words for the two pictures. We kept these words on one side of
the board and I wrote out some of his homework sentances on the other side of
the board. PJ did much better writing the sentences on the board than on the
paper. He was much more creative in his sentence structure when he could erase
the words and I guess the best word would be “careful” in what he wrote for the
last two sentences that he wrote on his homework page because it wouldn't fit
on the board. This makes sense because he is such a perfectionist and I will
try to incorporate the board whenever I can in our lessons.
He really liked the book that we
read and asked if we could alternate pages. This worked well. PJ was more
engaged in the story when he listened to me read sometimes and I continued the
comprehension questions throughout the book. We should read more next week and
I will keep this alternating method for future tutoring sessions.He really liked the book that we
