Last night I met with Jun, my little tutee. He told me that
he made a 100 on his test over the book that we read last week. I was so
excited for him, because he was visibly very proud of his achievement. After we
fixed ourselves some snacks and made room on the table to study, Jun handed me
a Star Wars book that he wanted to read for the session. It was a little bit
lengthier than the books that we were used to reading, but he insisted, so I accepted
his request. Fifteen pages into the book, I could tell that he was getting a
little fidgety and that it was becoming harder and harder for him to
concentrate. At this point, we still had a little over ten pages left to go. I
told him that if he read a page, then I would also read a page. He seemed to
really enjoy this idea. After we finished the book, I asked him a couple of comprehension
questions that were provided at the end of the book. He answered them all
correctly.
Once we finished reading, I got out an activity for us to
work on that would get his imagination going! I supplied him with a group of
pictures, and I asked him to make a story using all of the pictures. We played
this game during our first tutoring session, and he really liked it. This same enthusiasm
carried over the second time we played it as well. At the end of our session,
both Jun and I were invited to join a surprise Skype session with his baby
brother Kevin and his dad in Korea! Kevin is so overwhelmingly adorable! Every time Jun would say something to Kevin in
Korean, Kevin’s little face would light up, and he would become overwhelmed
with a flood of giggles. I ended up staying at Jun’s apartment for over an
hour, but I had a good time, and it was well worth the longer stay.
