I met Renan on Tuesday afternoon
last week, finally. We had had miscommunication the week before because neither
of us realized that the Friday CIES schedule meant that our lunch breaks don’t
line up like they do every other day of the week. I waited for Renan for almost all of my lunch
break and he got out of class right before I had to head back to work.
Our first meeting on Tuesday went
well though. Renan is not as advanced in
English as Ayoko so it was definitely more challenging for us to communicate.
He’s a Brazilian engineering student who is here on scholarship in hopes to
study in the States or in some English speaking country. We talked about what
we study, what we like to do for fun and I asked him questions about Brazil,
how he got to Tallahassee for his English Studies and what are differences between
Tallahassee and his home.
There was again a time where I ran into
someone I knew (a CIES teacher) and I forgot where I was and we spent a few
minutes talking about old instructors, his classes, what I’ve done since
graduation and so on in English as quick and informal as I usually do. After my
friend left, Renan and I talked about what all he caught from the conversation
and I summed it up for him. I try to slow my speaking pace down overall with my
conversation partners and tutors but it seems to be a constant struggle when I
get excited, anxious, or distracted in any way.
