I met Ayoko at the International Coffee hour on Friday. It
was really crowded and loud in the cafeteria There was no room for my husband
and I to sit with Ayoko and her friends so we went outside so we could sit
together and hear each other talk. I really enjoyed the conversation a lot
better today and I think Ayoko did too. I met her boyfriend, Kai, who is a
student at TCC right now. She told me that they have known each other since
kindergarten and have been dating long distance for over a year. She’s staying
with him while she does her English classes and she’s appreciative of the
opportunity for us to talk in English since she isn't always practicing English
outside CIES. I really enjoyed getting to know Ayoko and it’s easy for us to
communicate. We talked about all sorts of things but we also both enjoyed
sitting outside and enjoying the sunshine and peacefulness of the little
courtyard outside of the Globe. I’m looking forward to spending more time with
her and Kai and I hope that we can do some unique things around Tallahassee
since she is only here through the end of September. A friend of mine came up
and after introductions, I chatted with my friend about a scholarship she had
just won. I make a point to talk slower and I try to avoid slang when I am
speaking with English-learning friends but I forgot myself for a few minutes
because I was excited for my friend’s opportunity. After she left, I made sure
to ask Ayoko how much she understood and explained what she had missed from our
conversation. This was a much better setting than the lounge at CIES and Ayoko
and I will meet for lunch next week at the Globe again.
