TP #1 Hwa Won Lee

I met my tutee, Angelina, at room 106 in Kellogg building for the first time.
I was surprised to find out she was in the same class which I observed at the same day.
She is from Tanzania which is in the middle east part of Africa. She was a little shy, but we introduced each other in a friendly mood..
I prepared a two-pages of photo copied story (from the book "chicken soup for the kid's soul")from home, and suggested her to read together by taking turns. She read the first page, and I asked her if she understood the plot so far, but she said she understood just a little. I told her a brief explanation of the plot until then, and read the rest of the page myself. I found she understood better while she listened to my reading than her own reading, because she said she could understand this time. She asked the meaning of some vocabulary like vase, grounded, and pouring. I expained the meaning of the letters to her with examples of my own experiences. (for example, I grounded my daughter for two days as a punishment when she played with her friend in the bathroom because it is dangerous.) She understood easily with my explanation.
It seemed like her vocabulary is weaker than her listening and speaking skill. I think I can help her learning vocabularies by reading short stories together through our tutoring sessions.
As a foreigner, it's hard to teach someone English skills which is also hard to myself, but I am trying to be more confident.
I was disappointed when she said she has to leave early to go home with her aunt. We promised to meet at the same time next Tuesday, and I hope we can get to know each other better that day.
I gave her 6 pages of two short stories which I prepared for the next session, and told her to read it if she wants to at home. We can read during the session if she couldn't find time to read. I want her to regard our tutoring as fun process, not as a burden.
I am expecting to meet Angelina soon again.
