For this lesson, I took Fawaz and Abdul to a musical concert by a
Chilean group at Mission San Luis. We listened for about 45 minutes,
then left early. Outside the museum, we reviewed vocabulary related to
the experience: Chile, South America, North America, audience, band,
guitar, flute, oboe, bongo, drum, accordion, museum, wife, daughter,
etc. 'Daughter' and 'son' were new to Fawaz, as he struggled with which
was male and which was female. This again is good information for
measuring his command of vocabulary.
We then
crossed Tennessee Street to CVS to explore vocabulary related to a
pharmacy. Among vocabulary that I remember are: pharmacy, drug store,
candle, toothbrush, toothpaste, candy, Halloween, calcium, vitamins,
stomache ache, diapers, headphones, earphones, makeup, perfume,
fingernail polish, socks, light bulb, hammer, scissors, lock, cable,
sandals, toys, gum, and many other words and phrases.
I
do not have a lot of commentary on this session, since it was largely
only a name and write-down activity. I showed them where a couple of
Greek/Mediterranean restaurants were on Tennessee. This being an active
lesson outside, I did not take notes myself so I could focus on the
needs of Fawaz and Abdul.
