Last night I went to meet Jun for our second tutoring
session. As soon as I knocked on his apartment door, Jun quickly opened it, and
with a big smile on his face, exclaimed “Alice!”. His mother said that he was
really excited to see me, because he couldn’t eat his snack until I got there.
Even though he really wanted to eat it, he fought the urge to since he wanted
me to have some. I thought it was a very sweet gesture.
We began our tutoring session reading a book that was
assigned to him at school. Every once in a while, I would ask him to explain to
me what was happening in the story to make sure he was comprehending the
material since his mother told me that he was going to have a test on it the
next day. Afterwards, we played another game that worked on his elaboration
when speaking English. I noticed that last week he really liked drawing, so I
made sure to create an activity that emphasized it. For this activity, one person would have a
picture, and they would have to describe the picture to their partner. Their
partner would then try to recreate the picture using only their partner’s
description. Jun really seemed to enjoy this activity. Before I knew it, the hour had passed, and it was time for us to say our goodbyes. Time flies when you are having fun!
