PJ
and I continued to read Inside Your Busy Body, after reviewing the circulatory
system. We discussed how your heart is the size of your fist. I can tell PJ has
a more limited vocabulary when I try to explain other concepts to him. He has a
more limited schema—he didn’t know what a fist was. Still, he’s very smart and
eager to please. It’s just harder to relate new words and concepts to the ones
he already knows, and I feel for him.

We
then moved on to that week’s vocabulary. We got through about 4 words of 10.
Luckily there were words that PJ already knew like group and leader. However, I
was surprised at the words that all the second graders needed to learn: wicked,
cross, and observed were among them. I don’t know if I’ve ever used the word
cross or heard it in conversation. I think I probably learned it when I read an
older children’s book like
The Secret
Garden or
The Little Princess. Wicked
is also a word that would be easier to teach with a background in the Wizard of
Oz or witches at Halloween. It also means very bad, but again it feels older to
me. Still, we discussed things that are very bad, like someone breaking your
toy on purpose or a house being robbed. I think I need to look up more ways to
explain vocabulary beyond explaining it and giving example sentences and
drawings, since these words are outside of PJ’s schema.
