TP#1 Learning the Basics
September 5, 2013
I met Jane in the break room at CIES, an hour before TEFL class. Jane was delight to meet, and she was eager to start the tutoring session. Jane is new to America, she came from South Korea a few months ago.
Our first tutoring session focused on finding out just where Judy needed the most assistance. I had found a few short, magazine articles to read, the article was on the misuse of cellphones. First, I read a paragraph and asked her if she could follow what the paragraph was talking about. She was able to grasp some of the context of what the paragraph was referring to. Secondly, I had Judy read a paragraph. I noticed that she had some difficulty pronouncing the words. Words that had a th and ph sound was most difficult( them, they, Thursday, phone).I thought to myself, at least now I have some basis as to how to establish a plan to assist Jane.
After we read the article we discussed ways in which Jane wanted to improve her grasp of the English language. She said she wanted help in her speaking and listening skills. For our second tutoring session we are going to focus on listening and taking short dictation.
