Before class yesterday I met with Luichang. She appeared
kind of tired, so I asked her if she had a busy day, to which she responded
that she had taken a speaking midterm earlier in the day. Her midterm consisted
of a presentation, as well as timed speaking section. A young man that was
sitting beside Luichang (whose name I cannot recall) assured her that her
presentation went really well, and that he enjoyed it. She told me that she did
her presentation over her trip to Thailand. She shared this story with me the
previous meeting we had when the infamous bike story was told. I laughed and
also reassured her that if she did her presentation similar to the way she
retold it to me, then I am positive that she did well! She told me that she was
more nervous about her timed speaking grade, because she felt like her mind
went blank and the words that were produced were just a jumbled mess. I could
relate. I did Academic Decathlon and was on the literary team every year of
high school. I also presented at a couple of research symposiums when I was an
undergraduate in college. Even with my experience in public speaking, it’s
still the worst thing ever! So I told
her that I have problems with public speaking, and shared some horror stories. She
felt a little better after that. There is nothing like relishing in a little
past humiliation to make the conversation a little livelier. J Afterwards, she
cheered up, and we began speaking about our usual random conversations.
