On
Wednesday I met Igor my conversation partner from Brazil for the
first time. We met in the CIES kitchen and talked about Brazil and
Brazilian food, while playing dominos. Our common love of pao de
queijo (cheese bread) and acai was the catalyst of our conversation.
He told me about the beach trip and soccer game he went to with CIES
the weekend before and I told him about my trip to Brazil. He is a
civil engineering student and has only just starting learning
English, but has a good vocabulary base. We were not the best domino
players and soon we were joined by two people who actually knew the
“rules” of dominos. The four of us played until their next class
and Igor just happened to be going to the same class I was observing
that day. Igor says it is a hard to always practice his English
because he lives with another Brazilian, and a lot of people in the
program are from Brazil and they all just speak Portuguese because it
is easier. But he seems really dedicated to learning and wants to
know English for the skill of it.
