I met with Takuya yesterday right after my classes were over. We met
at Subway, given how it was 5PM and neither of us had eaten yet. He was a
very cheerful, friendly character who seemed to be enjoying his stay at
FSU.
After finally sitting down, he showed me what he
did over the Labor Day weekend. As a Sports
Management major, it's no surprise that he enjoys baseball (one of
Japan's national pastimes). However, I was astounded that he went all
the way to Atlanta, Georgia to watch a Braves game. He seems to be
enjoying being here quite a bit, but misses his hometown very much. He
told me that there isn't much in ways of finding anything that could
really be associated with his home in Kyoto. Sure, there are Japanese
restaurants in town, but they are not true to the cuisines that the
Japanese are used to.
We discussed future plans, which
he ended up saying that he doesn't know what he wants to do.
Apparently, before he came to CIES, he was ready to take a normal
vocational job (such as some sort of electrician or technician).
However, after coming to CIES, his "eyes have opened" and he isn't sure
whether he is okay with only having a normal job anymore. He told
me that he wants to keep traveling and go to all the major English
speaking countries in order to improve his English skills.
At about 7PM, he had to go attend the Japanese Student Association meeting, so I tried to drop him off where the meeting was to take place. Only, I, who has been here for over 3 years, found out that I was just as lost as the foreign exchange student. I look forward to meeting him again next week.
Way to set the stage for successful future exchanges!
ReplyDeleteNing, I think you like Subway! Nice touch dropping him off, though. When I was without a car, I so appreciated people taking the extra time to drop me somewhere convenient.
