I met Mahdi near the coffee pots at CIES and immediately
start speaking some Arabic with him. He seemed taken aback by this and then
started speaking very fast Arabic, so I said lets speak English. It turned out
that he had been a student at CIES for almost a year and that he plans on
attending college in the US and study engineering. He explained to me that he
is eighteen and from Kuwait. Most importantly he commented on his love of music
and showed me his library on his Ipad, which happened to be extensive. I’m
rather jealous. I asked him if he kept up with American music, which he did,
but couldn’t remember the artists names only the lyrics to the songs. I asked
him which types of music he really enjoyed, to which he said most of them but
he couldn’t understand the lyrics in rap music. I couldn’t either. We plan on
meeting again for lunch or at the gym when the shoulder heals up.
Good first contact to reduce Mahdi's "affective barriers" as Ms Kim says.
