I met Rafael at tea time. Before I went in, Jen told me to find the
tall guy in the blue shirt who likes to talk. This was my first
impression of him and was a fairly accurate one. Rafael is from
Venezuela, he has his undergrad degree in law. He proceeded to
explain how our country's law degree systems are very different,
which I didn't know about. He told me his motivation for coming to
the U.S. was to get a masters degree in International affairs, and
his dream school was Georgetown. He is a very good conversationalist
and his English is pretty good. Although I was a bit hesitant to
bring p the subject of politics I asked him about the current
political climate and the most recent election in Venezuela. As it
turns out he really likes talking about politics also, so we spent a
lot of time talking about the political endeavors of our respective
countries. Towards the end of our conversation we talked about traveling and where
he would like to go in the U.S. He spent some time in Miami when he
first got here and he really liked it and since I’m from there we
had a Miami fan club moment. He also took that time to compare it to
Tallahassee and explain some underlying disdain for the city and it's
size. Overall we had some interesting conversation and plan to meet
at tea time regularly.
I think it was good that you showed interest in where he is from. I also think you did a good job on finding a topic of common ground (Miami) and rolling with it! Keep up the good work! :)
