I went to the "group 1A - Listening class" to observe yesterday.
The teacher was Ms.Carretta, and she gave me a warm welcome.
She gave me a chance to introduce myself to the class, and a student wanted to know the difference between TEFL and TOEFL, so Ms.Carretta explained it.
Ms. Carretta started the class with a review of last lesson. They learned about an Indian prince whose name was Osceola. Ms. Carretta asked several questions about the last lesson, and wrote key sentences on the board. According to my understanding, Osceola was an Indian prince of the Seminole Tribe, and he carried a spear. He is also the mascot of FSU now.
Ms. Carretta then passed out a handout which had the rule of American football. There were 20 blanks, and Ms. Carretta told the class to not fill the blanks yet. She well explained the rules of football game with cheerful tone of voice, and the students listened very carefully, because they had to fill the blanks after the explanation.
I thought it was well planed activity, because students could learn America's famous sports while they build listening skill.
After this activity, Ms.Carretta asked the class to go outside and do a short imitational football game.
There were 20 students, and they were devided into 2 teams to do the game. A coin as a football, they enjoyed about 10 minutes of fun activity. Ms.Carretta helped them with instructing football rules during the whole activity.
Inside the classroom, I found out these all lesson came from the upcoming event at FSU (the football game: Seminoles vs. Nevada Wolf Pack) this Saturday. It seemed like the Students well informed about this game, and some of them already got the tickets. Ms.Carretta finished the lesson with going though some informations at the football stadium for those who are going to the stadium this Saturday.
I liked the friendly and vivid atmosphere of the class, and the consistency of her lesson was really appreciated. I enjoyed this experience.
What a great culture activity! And quite useful for students who are going to a football game. The rules are definitely complicated. I'm glad they got the chance to learn them in a calm, controlled setting instead of in the stadium!
